ANN ARBOR RAILROAD COMPANY
Michigan
Railroad Commissioner Report 1916
Inspection was made August 1st and 2d, 1916. This line extends from the State Line in Monroe county to Frankfort in Benzie county with a main line mileage of 283 miles. This company has no branches except spur tracks leading to industries. Considerable work is being done on their bridges, nineteen of them being rebuilt and six of the bridges are being provided with concrete abutments. Station buildings are receiving repairs. ten of them are being repainted. Six stations are being repainted inside and out. A new station will be erected at Pittsfield Junction, a connection with the New York Central Railroad. This station will cost about $2,200. This station is being erected to take the place of the one which was burned about two years ago. The rail in the track is 70, 80 and 85 pound and is generally good. However, there is considerable rail that should be replaced by new rail. Fourteen miles of new 85 pound rail is being laid this year. Twelve thousand ties are being renewed. Twenty-seven miles of new fence has been built and four miles of fence repaired. There still remains considerable fencing that should be renewed. Switch stands are provided with single targets, lights and locks. Wing fences and cattle-guards in fair condition. Highway crossing approaches in fair condition. A number of highways not provided with cattle-guards. Highway crossing signs generally in good condition. A number of new signs have been placed this year. The track is fairly well ballasted and the surface and alignment of the track is fair. The track between the State line and Durand should be re-ballasted and resurfaced. The company has purchased three large new freight locomotives. New coaling stations have been built at Lake George and Ann Arbor. The general condition of the right-of-way shows that very little attention has been given the cutting of weeds. The train service seems to be satisfactory and equal to the necessities of the traffic presented. Equipment is as required by law. Frogs and switches generally blocked.
